Navigating a massive and evolving content ecosystem with ease.

My extensive experience with Playstation spans game trailer concept and execution, marketing communications, and brand integration projects, across several different agencies. Having been involved since the early days of PSN and through various hardware cycles, I’ve developed a solid understanding of how to maintain the brand’s premium feel while navigating its complex, high-volume ecosystem.

A big focus of my work has been the functional side of the user experience, sitting at the intersection of UX/UI and brand identity. One aspect of my work has been leading the creation of procedural explainer videos—short subjects that translate complex systems into intuitive, high-fidelity guides. This involves taking a large, disparate range of content—blockbuster game and movie clips, technical licensing updates, and UI assets—and folding them into a cohesive script and modular library. Playstation’s designers provided a rich palette for us, from which we revealed creative opportunities; finding clever ways to leverage elements already present within the game footage to reinforce the brand in subtle, elegant ways.

Ironically, to humanize some of the PSN technical walkthroughs, we designed cheeky little PlayStation bots—mechanical characters that act as playful, helpful guides. They weren’t just decorative; they were designed using core brand elements to bridge the gap between the user and the technology. It was a way to give a high-tech platform and hardware a personality, making the “how-to” experience feel less like a digital manual and more like a guided tour.

By pulling colors, Playstation’s iconic symbols, and motion cues from the console’s actual interface, we ensured that even the most technical information felt like a natural extension of the gaming and entertainment environment. My earliest introduction to the PlayStation ecosystem was directing the trailer for the game MAG, which you can check out here. Working with Sony Playstation, and especially Tohru Okada’s iconic mnemonic, was a fantastic experience.

THE RESULTS

  • With the Playstation work, Sony saw an over 55% gain in PS Vue subscriptions, increased recognition for PS Store, and PSN becoming the top-rated OTT service in customer satisfaction.

  • Our teams translated complex technical features into intuitive explainers that prioritized user understanding while maintaining a high-fidelity aesthetic.

  • Scalable production pipelines allowed for rapid changes based on evolving licensing restrictions and feature updates.

  • MAG held the Guinness World Record for the most simultaneous players in a console game. I tell my friends I had something to do with that.
